Write about a time when you overcame an obstacle and how it changed your life.
(350-500 words).

Obstacle? An obstacle is best defined as something material or non-material, that stands in the way of literal or figurative progress. A very good example would be my Volunteer Instructor Programme (VIP) Course which was held last year during December 2010. My attitude was horrible before I was a qualified volunteer instructor.

Even before the registration of this VIP Course, my Youth-Officer, Miss Nicole, never fails to encourage me to join this course whenever he sees me. At that point of time, I was not prepared to take up the challenge of this programme as the criteria to pass out as an instructor requires two contact sessions and a 4 Days 3 Nights Camp. By attending this course, the instructors there will nurture me to be an excellent instructor so that when I graduate from Secondary School I will be able to help relieve the burden of Miss Nicole in Red Cross. At the same time, I can also bring my unit to greater heights. Upon hearing the criteria to pass out as volunteer instructor, I had to clear all my accreditation and I was reluctant to go. What had changed my mind to attend the VIP Course was the constant encouragement by Miss Nicole and also my Teacher-in-Charge, Miss Lim, saying that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

During my days in camp, I never thought that I could overcome an obstacle but I knew that the magic that surrounded me would lift me up and guide me all the way. Whenever I face difficulties, there will be people taking me by my hand and show me what i can do. After going through so much of ups and down during the camp, I successfully passed out as a volunteer instructor. I never thought that I could take the burn by enduring the toughness of the activities and sacrificing my sleep. I told myself not to give up because perseverance leads to success! After meeting the criteria of the course, Miss Nicole had praised me in front of my teachers and juniors about my attitude and her praising brighten up my day. After a few weeks, my attitude went back to how I used to behave previously. I get very fed up with my Red Cross teachers easily without knowing why. From my own point of view, I think it is because I learnt how to do thing efficiently and effectively and this was why I get angry with them. Maybe I am used to doing things faster and complete it earlier compared to last minute work. I always tell myself that not to blame any of the teachers for not doing anything because I understand that each of them has their own work to do like preparation of camps and exchange programme.

Although there are the good and bad of me, I am still grateful that Miss Nicole actually encouraged me to join the VIP Course. From there I can also see a change in myself in terms of attitude and values. I am now a person with a great sense of responsibility and do things efficiently. I believe this is what Miss Nicole and the other teachers want to see in me and this was how the VIP Course made a change in my life.
